Just 1 point in a skill tree means 3 novice skills, which is a huge amount of utility for 1 point. The reason being that it would give you thunderjump, shocking touch, bitter cold, vampiric touch, oath of desecration, midnight oil, boulder bash, bless - all for just 3 skill points. For instance, if you are wanting to build a 2handed knight character, it isn't a terrible idea to also throw in 1 point in aero/witchcraft/geo, or something along those lines.
